Tropocollagen mesotherapy is a modern scar treatment method involving intradermal administration of tropocollagen (a type I collagen precursor) together with a mixture of biostimulants. Effective in treating post-surgical, post-acne, post-traumatic scars, stretch marks and keloid scars.
Mechanism of Action
Tropocollagen is the monomer of type I collagen, consisting of three polypeptide chains wound into a triple helix. After intradermal administration it joins with the patient’s natural collagen fibres and acts biostimulatorily:
- Stimulates fibroblasts to produce new, correctly organised collagen
- Models the scar structure – fibres arrange in parallel, not chaotically (as in hypertrophic scars/keloids)
- Improves skin microcirculation – better tissue nutrition
- Evens the scar surface (restoring its appearance towards the original skin)
- Reduces discolouration by normalising melanocyte metabolism
- Eases tissue tension around the scar – reduction of pain and itching
Indications
- Post-surgical scars (after surgical incisions, including caesarean section, spinal surgery, orthopaedic procedures)
- Post-acne scars (atrophic, ice-pick, boxcar, rolling)
- Post-traumatic scars (after accidents, burns, cuts)
- Hypertrophic and keloid scars (combined with steroid)
- Stretch marks (striae) – fresh (red) and older (white)
- Scar pain (scar neuralgia – a common problem after surgery)
- Scar stiffness limiting mobility (e.g. after joint surgery)
Procedure Sequence
- Qualifying consultation – assessment of scar type, age, location and patient expectations.
- Pre-treatment photographic documentation.
- Skin disinfection, local anaesthesia (anaesthetic cream for 30 minutes or injectable).
- Intradermal administration of tropocollagen with a fine 30–32G needle using the micro-point technique (each point 2–3 mm from the previous one).
- Combination with other techniques (microneedling, peels, fractional laser) to enhance the effect.
- Cycle: 4–8 sessions at 2–4 week intervals.
- Each session lasts 30–60 minutes.
Effects
- First effects: after 2–3 sessions (improvement in elasticity, pain reduction)
- Full effect: after the complete cycle (3–6 months)
- Evening of the scar surface
- Reduction of redness and discolouration
- Relief of tension, reduction of pain and itching
- In keloid scars: gradual flattening and softening
- Best results with fresh scars (3–12 months from injury); older scars require more sessions
Possible Side Effects
- Transient redness and swelling (24–72h)
- Minor bruising
- Very rarely: allergic reaction (type I collagen preparation)
- Very rarely: infection (when aftercare instructions are not followed)
FAQ
Will mesotherapy completely remove my scar?
Complete scar removal is not possible with any conservative method. Tropocollagen mesotherapy significantly improves its appearance: evens the surface, reduces redness and eases tension. For fresh scars the results are spectacular.
When is the best time to start scar treatment after surgery?
Optimally 4–8 weeks after complete wound healing – at that point the scar is still plastic and amenable to remodelling. For older scars, therapy can begin at any time, though more sessions are required.
